6 September 2021
The University of Oxford has been named the best university in the world for a sixth consecutive year following the publication of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022.
Oxford saw off competition from Oxbridge rival the University of Cambridge, who finished joint-fifth, with a total of 28 UK universities featuring in the top global top 200. Imperial College London, University College London, London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Edinburgh all finished in the top 30.
Following a difficult year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was an encouraging performance from UK universities, with 19 of those 28 universities in the top 200 improving or maintaining their global position.
The Times Higher Education World Ranking is the only global university performance table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
